Deal Gains Recognition

Matthew C. Deal of Houston has been named a member of the Counselors of Real Estate, an international organization of respected real estate professionals.

Deal is co-managing partner of Lewis Realty Advisors, a well-known Houston-based appraisal and real estate counseling firm.

Established in 1953, the Counselors of Real Estate is an international membership organization of 1,100 advisors who provide intelligent, unbiased, and trusted real estate advice. Membership is selective, extended by invitation only.

““Matthew Deal is one of the top real estate experts in his field and is recognized nationally. Deal represents the high-caliber of real estate advisors who are invited to join this prestigious group and earn the CRE designation,” said Gregory Lewis, CRE, chairman of the Houston/Gulf Coast Chapter of the Counselors of Real Estate and Mr. Deal's sponsor.

Counseling is not considered a specific real estate discipline, such as brokerage, management, or appraisal. Rather, it is considered a problem-solving process. No matter the property type, real estate decision makers call upon Counselors for advice on the many diversified issues encountered in the broad field of real estate. Areas of expertise include: expert witness testimony and litigation support; economic and fiscal impact studies; financing; development; acquisition and dispositions; public/private partnerships and investment analysis and strategy.

To earn the CRE designation, a minimum of 10 years experience in the real estate field is required. The Counselors of Real Estate organization is an affiliate of the National Association of Realtors.

In his private practice at Lewis Realty Advisors, Deal has completed counseling assignments for many governmental agencies and private property owners. In addition, he has analyzed the impact of environmental conditions on property values and appraised the value of office buildings, apartments, golf courses, condominiums, restaurants, financial institutions, retail, distribution centers, master-planned communities, sports and entertainment facilities, timberland, churches, hotels, ranches, and raw land.

Perot Makes Big Play

in Houston Area

Hillwood, a Dallas-based firm led by Ross Perot Jr., has purchased the 3,827-acre Sienna Plantation South property in Fort Bend County near Houston. Hillwood's plans for the site calls for 7,000 single-family homes. The community will also have 300 acres for retail and commercial use; 100 acres for schools and churches and more than 1,000 acres for parks and open spaces. Editor's Note: A few days ago, I toured several of the Hillwood communities near Fort Worth by helicopter with Hillwood's Dave Pelletier. From the air, it is evident that Hillwood is capable of producing quality, well-planned developments. The arrival of a major firm like HIllwood in Houston is evidence that the residential market has a bright future. For more on Hillwood's acquisition, please go to our Houston Deals page. Hillwood also is developing a noteworthy urban project in downtown Dallas called Victory, which includes high-rise residential, hotels, retail and office. The outdoor plaza at Victory is a very appealing space. Ashley Parker, daughter of Houston real estate leader Kelley Parker, is on the Victory marketing/PR team.

Greater Houston Builders Association

Sponsors Charity Project at

Minute Maid Park

HomeAid Houston, a charity sponsored by the Greater Houston Builders Association and the local arm of HomeAid National teamed with the Houston Astros and Royce Builders to launch PROJECT PLAYHOUSE, Thursday June 28th at Minute Maid Park during the Astros game.  The playhouse is an elaborate 8 foot by 10 foot Texas-style cabin that was constructed with donated materials from companies throughout Houston.  The playhouse now sits in its temporary home in Minute Maid Park’s “Squeeze Play” area (the children’s playground in right field).  This ambitious fund raiser will benefit Houston’s homeless.

Sales of $5 raffle tickets began June 28th, giving fans a chance to win the playhouse in a drawing on July 28th.  Tickets are being sold throughout July at every game.

Royce Builders donated the construction of the playhouse, a miniature replica of a Texas-style cabin complete with cedar siding and stone, a tin roof, a front porch with slate flooring and outfitted inside with the less traditional “cabin” features the playhouse includes a flat screen T.V., cedar baseboards, cedar chair rail, electricity and childproof electrical plugs, phone/cable wiring, air conditioning, hardwood floors, a built-in bench and loft, blinds, a dutch front door, tempered glass on the windows and the playhouse is also wind proofed with storm clips.  The electrical company who donated the wiring has also offered to install at no charge, the underground electrical once the playhouse is installed at its final destination.  Members of the GHBA donated the necessary materials and labor for construction.  The Houston Astros have donated team memorabilia to decorate the interior of the playhouse.

Project Playhouse originated in Orange County, California as HomeAid’s signature fundraiser.  This will be the first year HomeAid Houston is partnering with a local builder to construct a playhouse.

“It has always been a priority for Royce Builders to give back to the community that has been so good to us over the past 23 years,” said Shawn Speer, Royce Builders Texas Regional Manager.  “When HomeAid Houston approached us about being the designated builder for this generous project, we were more than happy to sign on. This is exactly what we like to get involved in because it brings a number of different segments of the homebuilding industry together for a great cause."

“This exciting and unique fund raising effort has great potential in so many ways,” said Stuart Feldman, chairman of Project Playhouse and a member of the HomeAid Houston Board of Directors.  “An obvious benefit is to raise funds for new HomeAid construction projects that provide transitional housing for Houston’s homeless. It is also a powerful way to generate public awareness about the homeless and HomeAid’s commitment to assisting those less fortunate.”

“Project Playhouse is a fun way to generate funds for future HomeAid projects,” said Bette Moser, executive director of HomeAid Houston.  “We are so fortunate to have the professionals at Royce Homes, the Houston Astros, and the numerous GHBA members who have offered their services and materials, to make this project a reality.  With the interest and enthusiasm we are experiencing, we are confident that Project Playhouse could become an annual fund raiser.”

HomeAid Houston and Dakotablue Homes are teaming together for a second project for 2007 to construct two 4200 square foot homes for Boys and Girls Harbor.  These two houses will allow 16 youths to join the Boys and Girls Harbor program.  Boys and Girls Harbor was founded 60 years ago.  The organization has been committed to providing healthy, comprehensive care for children and families in crisis.  For children who are experiencing family hardship, neglect, abandonment or abuse, the Harbor provides a family environment in a home setting.  Through its programs, the Harbor strives to help children learn to overcome self-destructive patterns, break cycles of abuse, develop social skills, learn responsibility, and work toward becoming healthy, happy and productive members of society.
