Editor's Roundup: At the Expo Again
By Ralph Bivins Editor, RealtyNewsReport.com The annual Commercial Expo, formerly known as Developer Day, draws a large crowd from every corner of the Houston commercial real estate business. It was encouraging this year to see a packed house at the Hotel InterContinental, despite the downturn in the economy. It was good to see veteran broker Logan Brown of Grubb & Ellis among the familiar faces in the crowd. Brown, who recently sold an office building on the north side, said in today’s market it’s wise to focus on smaller properties because locating financing for large transactions is difficult. Stephen Ewbank of Planned Community Developers was all smiles after Minute Maid completed a big move to his Sugar Land project. A few of the others spotted on the floor: Michael Levitin; Bob Parsley, Bill Byrd and Greg Cizik of Colliers; Steve Jaggard; Kathleen O’ Connor of O’Connor & Associates; Kenneth Li; Juli Graves; Jim Carney; Bill McDade and Carlos Bujosa of McDade, Smith, Gould, Johnston, Mason and Co.; Charlie Savino of CDS Market Research; Donnie Chang of ABC Advisors; Gary Mabray; Wayne Stroman; Vicki Fullerton; Jim Peters; Mike Boyd and many more. Bob Hale, long-time President and CEO of HAR, was smiling about the big crowd for the 09 version of Expo. Sam Scott, who heads the Commercial Gateway, the online commercial listing service for HAR, was a popular guy at the event. Also spotted from the HAR staff: Rene Galvan, Lori Carper, and David Mendel. I’ve always enjoyed going to the Commercial Expo and I don’t think I’ve missed one in over a decade. If you went (and I bet you did) and had an enjoyable time, then drop a line to Dave Cook at Cushman & Wakefield. When he was vice president of SIOR in 1983, Cook started Developer Day. That first one was held in the Knoll Furniture Showroom. Cook later became president of HAR . Anyway, the 27th year of the event was a good one. And I hope they keep it going for another 27 years – or longer. ................................................................
